Thakin

Thakin
   Meaning "master" in the Burmese (Myanmar) language, the term was used by Burmese during the colonial era to address British people, roughly equivalent to sahib in India (thakinma was used to address a woman). The Dobama Asiayone appropriated the term to refer to members of their own party, asserting that the Burmese rather than the British were the true masters of the country (thus, the Dobama Asiayone was widely known as the "Thakin Party," and its members as "Thakins"). As a title, it is presently used to refer to individuals who were members of the party or who actively participated in the struggle for independence, for example, Thakin Aung San or Thakin Nu.
